Just for Hicks: Eight men on

By

taylor hicksTaylor Hicks not only sang a scorcher live tonight, but also danced … sorta. At least his “American Idol” missteps were from the ankles down and looks golden for the Top 12.

Recap after the jump …

Updated with video, eliminations.

Couch time with the host.

Taylor Hicks

Talking about the time he worked as a mall Easter Bunny.

Song: “Takin’ It to the Streets” by the Doobie Brothers

Judges say: Randy: “Great song choice … good job singing. But dude, the dancin’ was a little … You representin’ the Dawg Pound up there!” Paula: “That was my favorite performance from you. I am blown away.” Simon: “You singlehandedly could kill the music video industry (with that dancing). … Absolutely love the song. … You stood out, best performance so far.”

‘Takin’ it to the streets …’

We say: We still cringe a little at Michael McDonald (thanks, “40 Year Old Virgin”), and it’s not the first time the comparison has been made. But you gotta go with the judges and audience, an outstanding performance that shows he’s Top 12 material.

Taylor gets Paula on her feet; showing off the signature move.

Taylor says: (on his previous mall job) “I was the main attraction as the Easter Bunny, and now my bunny days are over.”

Idol thoughts: Seriously, the dancing must stop. It’s like he’s kicking, with the thumbs … Anyway. Ace Young and Chris Daughtry were also standing tall. And did we mention Huntsville native Bo Bice performing on Thursday’s elimination show? Rock on.

Voting closes at 10 tonight.

Update: Hear Hicks perform “Takin’ It to the Streets” at Rickey.org.

Update: Eliminated on March 9: Ayla Brown, Will Makar, Gedeon McKinney and Kinnik Sky.

Thus, the final 12 are:

  • Paris Bennett,

  • Bucky Covington,
  • Chris Daughtry,
  • Mandisa,
  • Melissa McGhee,
  • Katharine McPhee,
  • Kellie Pickler,
  • Lisa Tucker,
  • Elliott Yamin,

  • and Birmingham’s Taylor Hicks.

And let’s not forget Huntsville native Bo Bice, who kicked off the night with “The Real Thing.” Meh.

funny – I seem to always read about Hicks’ performance on your blog before I get to watch it on my DVR. Who woulda thunk it could happen like that?

McDonald was already aware of how much Hicks looks like him, using Hicks’ picture as the cover of “The vest best of Michael McDonald.”

Still gotta watch it just to see all the interviews and judges’ comments and that freaky “Starry Starry Night” performance.

No, he mustn’t change a thing!! He’s the quirkiest, most adorable personality we’ve seen on our tv sets in decades!! His love of life and love of music is so infectious. He just makes people smile. That’s on top of his jaw-dropping musical talent. Yes, they broke the mold after he was born and the AI viewers are the richer for it.

I think that Taylor will be sticking around for a long time… whether or not he wins AI. There have been many concerns that he won’t get votes from the younger audiences… but then again… I’m in my early 20’s and I absolutely find Taylor adorable and I love his music. There just seems to be something about him.
