Wade on Birmingham

Shout: The scoop

Birmingham ShoutFestival season is upon us. The newest of the spring crop is Birmingham Shout, a two-day showcase of films with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender themes. So far, so good: Friday’s opening night film/party is already sold out, and Saturday’s lineup looks intriguing.

What can you expect? Dramas, documentaries and dancing. And likely, a few surprises.

Maybe it says something about Birmingham’s cultural climate that it can play host to a gay film festival. Or maybe it’s a testament to the growth of the Alabama Moving Image Association, the group behind the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, now in its eighth year.

Nonetheless, movie fans of all stripes should check out the lineup. We know we shall.
