Ducks and donkeys

While Birmingham and surrounding cities are trying to stamp out the gambling monster we call Gamblor, two charity fund-raisers want you to roll the dice this week.

Well, not actually dice — that would be boring. Instead, bet on winning hands and racing ducks. Yes, racing ducks.

The Magic City Texas Hold’em Championships V pits would-be poker studs against “donkeys” on Wednesday. Handy tip: If you’re sitting at a table and don’t see a donkey, you’re the donkey.

It’s no-limit play, with $30 buy-in for $600 in chips and rebuy at $20 for $200 in chips. Prizes include an iPod, a 20-inch TV set with DVD player and a weekend trip to Sam’s Town Tunica. Players receive free food, plus a cash bar will available.

All proceeds go to Kid One Transport, which provides rides to medical appointments for children and expectant mothers. Started in 1997, this nonprofit group has given more than 75,000 rides.

Registration and check-in starts at 6 p.m., games start at 7 at B & A Warehouse in Lakeview. To register in advance, contact Suzanne Thrash at 978-1005 or sthrash@kidone.org.

Young, Hot, Famous Birmingham (we’re one out of three) is the July event for Young Professionals of Birmingham and benefits Junior Achievement. The mixer features the first Celebriducky Derby.

Participants can buy ducks that resemble celebrities, such as Snoop Duck and Elvis Duck, at the auction and race them for cash prizes. Handy tip: Make sure your duck isn’t fresh outta rehab.

Junior Achievement teaches children about business and economics through their schools. The Birmingham chapter worked with more than 23,000 children during the school year.

The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Local Restaurant and Cocktail Bar in the Vestavia Hills City Center. Admission is $20, which includes food and drink. For more information, contact Jennifer Hatchett at 290-2965, ext. 119 or jhatchett@hiwaay.net.
