Taylor Hicks: An Idol preview

By

hicks-workplay.jpgWhat can the Soul Patrol expect tonight at the American Idols concert? Birmingham’s Taylor Hicks is back with nine “also-rans” (provided Katharine McPhee doesn’t bug out, again) to perform before a sold-out show at the BJCC Arena.

If you missed out on tickets, or just want to see what you’re getting for your $36.50 to $66.50, we have a sneak peek …

From reviews of previous tour stops:

  • The New York Times said Hicks “offered almost nothing but grunts and exclamations” while the others were not even memorable.
  • The Boston Globe said the show was “a nearly three-hour, power-pop romp touching musical bases from soul … and rock … to pop.”
  • The Birmingham News attended the Wilkes Barre, Pa., show as paying fans and said “the second half of the show takes a stratospheric leap over the first, due to the presence of (Chris) Daughtry, (Elliott) Yamin and Hicks.”
  • Many newspapers have balked at the tour organizers’ veto power over news photos.
  • Also, Hicks hit the stage with the new Rat Pack (Daughtry, Yamin and Bucky Covington, shown above) Monday night at WorkPlay with the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra. The band and Hicks have made a few joint appearances on previous tour stops. [video]

If he’s not busy enough touring and popping into clubs, he’s also working on his memoir, for which he received an estimated $750,000. The ghost-written bio is expected in the spring.

The concert at the BJCC was surprisingly good – Lisa was the strongest of the pre intermission. Elliott was pathetic, only word for it.

Curtis, I’m surprised you still have your hearing after all the damn screaming.

I heard Lisa was uncharacteristically great, playing piano and belting out Elton John songs at the BJCC Arena. You know who else I’ve seen do that? Elton John.
