A last look at the ’06 …

Then and now

It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad cow: The United States’ third ever incidence of mad cow disease came from one in Alabama. Out of a herd of 40. Out of 1.3 million cattle statewide.

The cow was believed to be at 10 years old, born before the 1997 ban on feed containing cattle parts. Scientists announced in June that the cows from Alabama and Texas (discovered in 2005) likely shared the same atypical strain of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, one difficult to detect.

And proving that the madness wasn’t limited to bovines, then gubernatorial candidate Roy Moore spouted off on his opposition to a national livestock tracking system, one designed to quickly pinpoint a diseased animal’s origin. He also raised suspicions that the appearance of mad cow was timed to coincide with the Senate’s consideration of implementing the tracking system.

Don’t have a cow, man.

Bracket or bust: After such a topsy-turvy football season, it’s hard to remember that the basketball season paid off with not one, not two, but three state teams in the NCAA men’s tournament.

Alabama, UAB and South Alabama made the big dance — though only Alabama moved past the first round, falling to UCLA by game two. The real winner? UAB coach Mike Anderson, who signed a five-year, $4.25 million contract with Missouri shortly after exiting the tournament.

Former Indiana coach (and native Alabamian) Mike Davis now leads the Blazer team, so far 8-5 for the season. Anderson led UAB to a 24-7 record last season and three NCAA appearances during the last four years. Ah, we’ll never tire of coaching carousel conjecture. Never.
