If your self-esteem is dangerously high, perhaps you need a good cussin’. Have we got the guy for you …
His name is Rush Propst, and in case you lived under a rock (or in Gardendale) this past season, he’s the loud, large, LOUD football coach at Hoover High. And he’s back for a second season of “Two-a-Days,” the MTV reality series tackling (football metaphor) the behind-the-scenes drama of a championship team.
Listen closely. He’s yelling at you right now.

Birmingham-based Cobb Theatres was once the only game in town. It was sold to Regal Cinema in Knoxville, which has gradually closed all but one of its locations in the metro area. Brook Highland 10 closed Sunday.
Along the way were the Green Springs 6, Hoover Twin, Hoover Square 6, Center Point 6, Wildwood 14, Festival 18, Galleria 10 and the lone survivor, Regal Trussville 16. Rave has become the dominant player with locations at Vestavia Hills, Lee Branch and Patton Creek, and Carmike still has the Summit, Wynnsong and bargain Carmike in Hoover. And AmStar has one location in Hoover.
Arthouse fare had had a home at the Galleria, and then at Brook Highland. A few can be seen sometimes at Summit. Still, Safari Cup, Workplay, Rojo, McWane’s IMAX and Sidewalk have opened up new options for indie and non-mainstream films, and UAB will have its 25th annual three-day International Film Festival starting Friday.
By the way, Cobb Theatres quietly resumed operations in 2000 in Birmingham, with locations in Tuscaloosa, Jasper, Gulf Shores, several cities in Florida, soon to be in Savannah, Ga. — and none in Birmingham. Thank you, and enjoy the movie.

Our pals at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute wanted you to know that the first Sixteenth and Sixth of 2007 takes place at 6:16 tonight. It’s $10 for the evening of “Galleries Alive” (which sure beats the opposite), with performances by Shariff Simmons and R-Tist. [map]
Our pal Charles opens his new exhibit, See Block City, at Naked Art Gallery in Forest Park. Opening receptions are 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. [map]
Our pal Eartha wanted you to know that Rojo [map] will hold a silent art auction to benefit the family of Shane Hulsey, paddler and envrionmentalist. The auction runs 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Also, Bottletree [map] will hold the Raindrop Music Festival at 2 p.m. Sunday. Performances by Ferocious Bubbles, Duquette Johnston, Sunny So Brite, the Saturdays and more. Tickets are $10.
And coming up later in the month, the Artwalk Brewhaha at Starbucks in Five Points South (featuring our pal Philip’s photography) and the YP Birmingham monthly event (from our pal Amy), A Black Tie Dye Affair at Zydeco, both on Jan. 26.

Apparently, the world needs more trucks, and Birmingham’s the place to build them. Alabama’s automaking industry added another player, Isuzu, to its already impressive roster of Mercedes, Hyundai and Honda. The Tokyo-based company bought the former Del Monte distribution center for nearly $8 million and could create up to 1,000 new jobs. Ironically, many auto dealers have fled Birmingham in recent years for greener pastures in the outlying metro areas.
Still, it’s a big step for Birmingham, as the other automakers chose sites around the state (Vance, Lincoln and Montgomery). Yes, we’re as good as Lincoln.
