Then and now

Stages and the city: City Stages 2008 brought the usual highs and lows, including …

Videos from the festival, after the jump …

‘Creep,’ Ingrid Michaelson
‘Georgie Buck,’ Carolina Chocolate Drops

We also gave you just a taste of the other June events, the BamaJam Music and Arts Festival and the Juneteenth Celebration. Attendance for the first year of BamaJam? More than 110,000 people. Wow.

More coverage in City Stages 2008.

One in seven voters recommend …: The official state primary came and went, with few surprises and few voters. Incumbent Sen. Jeff Sessions (Republican) will face state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures (Democrat) in November.

Spoiler alert: Sessions beats Figures 58 percent to 34 percent in the latest Rasmussen Reports poll and 61 percent to 36 percent in the FiveThirtyEight projection.

Also, John McCain has a 96 percent chance of taking Alabama’s nine electoral votes, beating Barack Obama 51 percent to 36 percent, according to Rasmussen Reports. And FiveThirtyEight says it’ll be a whopping 58 percent to 39 percent for McCain come Election Day.

The glamorous life: We found the prettiest people in town. Turns out, they were all hiding in a magazine. Are they hot or not? Rate Birmingham Magazine’s “Beautiful People.”

Film for free: “Mulan,” “Night at the Museum,” “Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” and “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” are all playing for free in the next seven days. And you can find them (plus dozens more) in our 2008 Ultimate Summer Movie Guide. Plus trailers, plus a whole lot more.

More in the Ultimate Summer Movie Guide.

Reality round-up: Ruben Studdard got married … see the video. Plus updates on Taylor Hicks and Rush Propst.

Or 17,000 syllables later …: I’ve posted 1,000 haiku and counting, and even wrote most of them. (Yes, this is slightly insane.) The milestone poem below.
