We owe much to Martin Luther King Jr. in his pursuit of civil rights for all. Thursday, President Obama designated Birmingham’s civil rights district as a national monument. That area includes the A.G. Gaston Motel, where King planned demonstrations in 1963.

We celebrate Rep. John Lewis, who came through Anniston, Birmingham and Montgomery with the Freedom Riders. These protestors were greeted with mob violence and critical injuries. These two videos explain his courage and perseverance in the face of a hostile audience.
