Tuesday Night Lights: The (Vestavia) Hills

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

The bitch is back. Coach Propst is in full-tirade mode this week, as he and the Hoover Bucs face longtime rival, the Vestavia Hills Rebels. It’s a hatefest on “Two-a-Days,” and everybody’s coming.

The parents are fired up. The players are fired up. The cheerleading coach is fired up. Their fury is so, so delicious. This episode is so … dare we say … blogtastic?! We shall.

american idol

Birmingham dominates the tube tonight, on network and cable television. First, see how August’s first ever local auditions for “American Idol” turned out. Our guess: screechingly bad. An AP reporter shares her experience trying out for the singing reality competition. It airs at 7 tonight on Fox 6.

Then, at 9, flip over to MTV for the season premiere of “Two-a-Days,” with a shocking start to the reality drama about the Hoover High football squad. (Check out our review, complete with spoilers, free previews and advance airtimes.)

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Forget basketball. Who cares about hockey? On MTV, it’s football season … again.

“Two-a-Days” is back, with a semi-new crew of players, cheerleaders and a more sensitive(!) Coach Propst. Don’t believe us? Drop and give us 20, slacker. Um, pretty please?

We’ve got the inside scoop on Tuesday’s premiere — including how to watch it for free, how to get a leg up on your fellow Bucs fans, and the exciting (read: creepy) new cheerleading coach.

Two weeks till ‘Two-a-Days’

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

If your self-esteem is dangerously high, perhaps you need a good cussin’. Have we got the guy for you …

His name is Rush Propst, and in case you lived under a rock (or in Gardendale) this past season, he’s the loud, large, LOUD football coach at Hoover High. And he’s back for a second season of “Two-a-Days,” the MTV reality series tackling (football metaphor) the behind-the-scenes drama of a championship team.

Listen closely. He’s yelling at you right now.

Taylor Hicks: On the record

Monday, December 11th, 2006

After a successful tour for “American Idol,” does Taylor Hicks have anything left to prove?

Well, he has yet to put out a CD under new management.

That changes Tuesday with the release of “Taylor Hicks” [Amazon | iTunes], a pop/blues/soul album that tones down the numerous “woo!” and “yeah!” interjections to which TV fans have grown accustomed.

Hicks delivers what he has long promised: a fun, lively set of songs that play to his strengths of performance and precision.

Updated with free song download …

EXCLUSIVE: For Repete’s sake

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

After a state championship four-peat, Repete is on pause from football.

two-a-days

Dwarn Smith, better known as “Repete” on the MTV reality series “Two-a-Days,” played as a defensive lineman for the Hoover High football team. No. 91 moved to Hoover from nearby Birmingham to join the nationally ranked Bucs.

Smith earned a reputation on the show as a tough trash-talker, an intense athlete and a laid-back jokester. This fall, the 18-year-old Auburn freshman became the first member of his family to attend college.

In this exclusive interview with Wade on Birmingham, Smith talks about life without football, his girlfriend Megan, the most important life lesson from Coach Rush Propst and his outgoing dad.

• Were you satisfied with how much airtime you received? Why did the producers choose you among all the players?

I think they chose me because I was laid back, and the cameras really didn’t affect how I acted.

I wasn’t really satisfied with the airtime. I could have stood to see the screen a little more — and from the 1,000,000 e-mails I get a week, my fans think so, too.

two-a-days

In an MTV first, the last episode of “Two-a-Days” screened online Wednesday night before its Oct. 18 broadcast. And the post-post-season Hoover Bucs are looking forward to baseball and college ball.

Finally, some answers for fans’ burning questions: Who earns a football scholarship? Who ends up playing baseball? And which couples stay together? (Hint: not Alex and Goose.)

It’s zero-a-days for part two of the season finale. [recap of part one]

Wednesday Night Lights: Winning is everything

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

The Hoover Bucs have made it to the state championship game. One more victory means a fourth consecutive title and ring.

OMG, who cares?!? What about Alex and Kristin? Are they like broken up or what? The final game, the final parting shots, the final ridiculous hairstyles, all on part one of the season finale of “Two-a-Days.” [recap of part two]

Let us give thanks for friends, for family, for victory over our enemies. Let us give thanks for Hoover Bucs football, for coaches who still love their mamas and meemaws and for hot cheerleader girlfriends and their hotter squadmates.

Let us give thanks for the very special Thanksgiving edition of “Two-a-Days.” Amen.

Wednesday Night Lights: Revenge is sweat

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

To no one’s surprise, the defending state champs are back in the playoffs. Can the Hoover Bucs win their umpteenth 6A championship, glory and free wings?

What cheerleader can’t spell or work a dictionary? Whose dad is a miserable camera-hogging drunk? And who really really really wants it more? These questions and more, on the next “Soap,” er, “Two-a-Days.”

Wednesday Night Lights: Homecomings and goings

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

It’s all about football in Hoover, from the high school varsity squad to the cheerleaders to the pee-wees. Not even Homecoming Week distractions can keep the Bucs from doing their jobs.

Um, what are their jobs again? It’s something about beating the piss outta something, or dressing up in costumes.

Anyway, “Two-a-Days.”
