The last time he won a reality TV competition 10 years ago, Ruben Studdard donned a “205” jersey.

This season, the Birmingham singer sports the “462,” his starting weight as the heaviest contestant on “The Biggest Loser.”

Studdard, the winner of “American Idol” in 2003, will be among the 15 contestants competing for a $250,000 grand prize, awarded to the one who loses the highest percentage of weight.

The NBC show enters its 15th season.

Age 34 when the competition began, he comes in not only with a weight problem, but also sleep apnea, high blood pressure and diabetes. Studdard is the first celebrity contestant among the 300 in the show’s history.

Even the show itself is slimming down, with most episodes to run 1 hour instead of the usual 2.

“The Biggest Loser” premieres at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 on Alabama’s 13. The finale will air Feb. 4.

Paul McDonald: ‘The “Idol” stage was out of my element’ http://wadeonbirmingham.com/2011/04/16/paul-mcdonald-american-idol-interviews-video/ http://wadeonbirmingham.com/2011/04/16/paul-mcdonald-american-idol-interviews-video/#respond Sat, 16 Apr 2011 20:34:38 +0000 http://wadeonbirmingham.com/?p=12768 American IdolPaul McDonald discusses his time on the show.]]>

Video: “American Idol” sends Paul McDonald home.

Singer-songwriter Paul McDonald went further on “American Idol” than he expected. The Alabama native was booted Thursday from the reality competition in eighth place, making him the first male contestant of the Top 13 to go.

American IdolViewers vote to keep their favorite singers on the show each week. For this week’s theme, movie songs, McDonald performed “Old Time Rock and Roll” by Bob Seger.

McDonald, who was born in Auburn and grew up in Huntsville, will tour with the other finalists this summer while giving his voice and body some rest in the meantime.

In telephone interviews with media Friday, McDonald shared his thoughts on the show and how he fared.

He told TV Guide:

“I tried to do these covers as good as I could, but it never really felt right. I was always kind of uncomfortable on the ‘Idol’ stage just because it was out of my element. I really felt like I had gone as far as I could. Because I’m not the best singer. I’m a songwriter and an artist, and all these other people have amazing voices. So I could only go so far. And I knew it.”

McDonald’s band, the Grand Magnolias, had serious objections to his participation on “Idol”:

“We literally spent all of our money on the new album, and we got some big producers to work with us on it, and it was what we had been working towards for the past 5 years. The band was like, ‘Dude, hopefully you don’t make it any farther.’ But the farther along I got, the more they started getting nervous about their jobs and stuff. But in the end, it worked out good because the album was on iTunes and Billboard and stuff. So they got to pay their rent.”

Paul McDonald says farewell at the end of Thursday’s
results show on “American Idol.”

McDonald told the Huntsville Times:

“When I got up here, I listened to some people when I probably should have stuck with my guns. I just wish I had done some more of these obscure artists, more of the vibe of music I was into.”

Judges say: Steven: “I love your crazy, wild abandon. What you got back from (the audience), that says it all.” J. Lo: “Every time you come out here, it’s like you’re going a little bit further in your performance, in just letting go. You killed it. Good job.” Randy: “America, you just witnessed the first number in the Paul McDonald concert. I love that you are just not a typical singer — you’re definitely an artist.”

We say: Paul is becoming the good time guy, but can he really stir people, or will he always just be the party rock guy? And will it take him much further in the competition?

American IdolAs you may recall, Casey Abrams almost went home last week, but the judges used their only save to keep him on “American Idol.” And so, two contestants will be going home this week.

During the first five seasons of “American Idol,” you could hardly see an episode without someone from Birmingham belting out a tune. Champions Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks and runner-up Bo Bice made it through three seasons of competition.

But the recent five seasons have been Alabama free. Until now.

Auburn native Paul McDonald will be part of the Top 13 on the 10th season of “American Idol.” The Fox reality competition features singers as young as 15 performing for viewers’ votes, with the winner receiving a recording contract.

In case you’ve tuned out, the show has brought in new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler (so long, Simon Cowell) to team with Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest. The competition show will air at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, and the results will air at 7 p.m. Thursday on Fox 6.

McDonald, 26, graduated from Huntsville High School and performs with his band the Grand Magnolias, formerly Hightide Blues, based in Nashville. McDonald’s parents live in Huntsville.

He advanced from the group of 24 contestants with Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May,” and also performed “Blackbird” by the Beatles and “Tutti Frutti” by Little Richard in earlier rounds. The singer has also released three albums, including this year’s self-titled” The Grand Magnolias.”

McDonald has also been active in social media, originally on Twitter as @thePaulMcDonald with nearly 10,000 followers, and now tweeting from his mandated “Idol” account at @PMcDonaldAI10, the first of this season’s contestants to reach 5,000 followers.

The Grand Magnolias has its own Facebook page.

McDonald breaks a four-season drought for Alabama on the top-rated show. He spent the day sleeping in and preparing to see the premiere of “Red Riding Hood.”

His first round of finals competition begins Wednesday.

In December, Huntsville a cappella group Committed won “The Sing-Off,” NBC’s reality singing competition. Fairhope native and former Auburn head cheerleader Krista Klumpp has been competing in this season of “Survivor: Redemption Island.”

What happens when you add 205 and 404? L-u-v.

Surata Zuri McCantsRuben StuddardRuben Studdard will head to the chapel, and he’s gonna get married. Saturday, Birmingham’s first American Idol champ marries Surata Zuri McCants, 30, at Canterbury United Methodist in Mountain Brook. McCants, a flight attendant from Atlanta, met the 29-year-old R&B singer at a CD signing at Wal-Mart in October 2006.

He’s expected to have 20(!) groomsmen for the ceremony.

According to Canterbury’s “Wedding Guide” (PDF), use of the chapel and sanctuary is free for church members, but $500 and $1,000 for others, cash only. Also, flash photography is prohibited, and video cameras are restricted to the balcony and the right rear door of the chancel.

As for music, only the church organist may play, so no Just a Few Cats. And no secular music, so while “Get U Loose” from his 2006 disc “The Return” is out, “Amazing Grace” from his 2004 gospel CD “I Need an Angel” is fine.

After the honeymoon (details unknown), Studdard plans to release a CD of covers in August, then begin rehearsals for the touring musical “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” which arrives in February at the BJCC Concert Hall.

But then football coach Rush Propst lost his job as rules violations and a second family came to light. Nowadays, he’s down in Georgia’s Colquitt County trying to rebuild its once successful program. Plus, he’s doing it for a paltry $95,000 (in a one-year contract) instead of the $100,600 he was making in Hoover.

His wife and two of his children remain in Hoover, while his oldest son will join him on the team. (As in his current family, not his out-of-wedlock family.)

How serious is his new school about football? It has spent or committed $2.9 million toward stadium renovations and a new field house. And for those fans who miss seeing him talk pigskin, check out the interview by a student at his new school.

Soul control: The other reality sensation to come from Hoover High, one Taylor Hicks, has signed with a new label. The American Idol/Broadway singer has landed at Vanguard Records and plans to release his next disc in August under his own brand, Modern Whomp Records.

On patrol: How’s new Birmingham police chief A.C. Roper doing so far? Seven months in, the former Hoover assistant chief will hold a second Community Crime Fighting Forum at 6 tonight at the South Precinct [map]. Roper will listen to citizens’ concerns and outline his plan to fight crime. Meanwhile, 2008 has seen 34 homicides, about even with last year’s 33 homicides through June 23. Taylor Hicks, season five winner, will head to Broadway for a three-month run as Teen Angel in “Grease,” starting June 6.

The soul singer will perform “Beauty School Dropout,” with tickets starting at $71.50.

Hicks isn’t the only reality star in the show: Lead actors Max Crumm and Laura Osnes won their roles on NBC’s “You’re the One That I Want” in 2007. And he joins the long list of “Idol” finalists on the Great White Way, including Clay Aiken, Birmingham-born Diana DeGarmo, Constantine Maroulis and season three winner Fantasia Barrino.

And after being dropped by J Records, he’s planning on finishing his follow-up album this summer.

The J Records bloodbath continues. After dropping 2003 American Idol Ruben Studdard in December, the label dropped 2006 American Idol Taylor Hicks Monday. The two Birmingham singers are the first champs in show history to be dropped by Arista. Studdard released three albums, including one platinum and one gold, while Hicks released just one, which went platinum.

Looks like the Soul Patrol let their commander down. Dishonorable discharges all around.
