By Wade KwonTen reasons to watch “The Amazing Race,” which returns Sunday for its 10th edition …
1. You like underdogs? Alabama has its first team in the competition: Lyn Turk, left, of Birmingham and Karlyn Harris of Helena. All-female teams have typically done poorly in the race, but maybe this team will avoid “Phil-imination.”
2. As in, Phil Keoghan, host, stud, Kiwi. Not only does he send one team home each leg, but also explains (every single episode) the tasks:
- “A Detour is a choice between two tasks, each with its own pros and cons.”
- “A Roadblock is a task which only one team member may perform.”
- “The last team to arrive at the Pit Stop may be eliminated.”
3. You see, it’s a race around the world. By the time teams reach the finish line, they’ll have visited 13 countries and covered more than 40,000 miles.
4. The Chinese love Alabamians!
5. Teevee: “It’s certainly off to a running start. And despite the format tweaks, the show’s underlying joys are still there.”
6. The teams are divided by race! Except they do that every season. And unlike “Survivor,” this show has little to do with alliances and voting. Fastest team wins $1 million.
7. Lyn (to TV set): “Go, girl, go, go!!”
8. Consider it your Monday morning watercooler fodder.
9. Karlyn, on meeting Lyn in ninth grade: “When I initially met her, she talked a lot, and I really can’t stand people that talk a lot. … She just works her way into being your friend.”
10. The season premiere is a supersize 90 minutes: more arguments, more gesturing to cab drivers and a surprise elimination?!
The premiere of “The Amazing Race” airs at 7:30 p.m. Sunday on CBS 42. Remaining episodes will air at 7 p.m. Sundays.
