The mayor’s new diet

Friday, July 7th, 2006

Bigger isn’t always better.

The most recent list from the United Health Foundation, a nonprofit health research group in Minnesota, ranks Alabama as the nation’s fattest state, tied with Mississippi. Among Alabamians, 28.8 percent are considered obese, having a body mass index of 30 or higher.

That’s a lot of unwanted pounds.

It’s time for elected officials to do something about this health crisis with consequences from skyrocketing rates of heart disease and diabetes to staggering financial costs.

And Mayor Kincaid is already on the job.

scrushy and siegelmanVESTAVIA HILLS — 27 OCT 2018 — Released earlier today from federal prison, Don Siegelman and Richard Scrushy received a warm welcome from dozens of supporters as they returned to the outside world. Siegelman and Scrushy both completed 12-year prison terms following their 2006 convictions on charges of bribery, conspiracy and fraud.

The pair shook hands with friends and made short statements at the rally, skipping media questions before exiting quietly. The rally featured a marching band and former investors in the men’s careers.

City Stages 2006: Very silent auction

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

city stagesThe City Stages 2006 eBay fund-raiser ended at 2 a.m. this morning. You probably didn’t hear about it.

The downtown music festival, still trying to erase its half-million-dollar debt, has tried all sorts of wild schemes to raise money. But the online auction seems saddest of all: 18 items, 12 bids (on only four items), $241 in profit and zero publicity.

Taylor Hicks: Idol interview

Friday, May 26th, 2006

Taylor Hicks, the new American Idol, is caught in a whirlwind of media interviews. The Birmingham native spoke to reporters via teleconference earlier this afternoon about the meanest thing Simon Cowell said to him, why his dream woman should cook and what he would’ve sung (or not sung) on the show.

The big secret

Honestly, I never watched the show until I was on it. While Bo (Bice) and Ruben (Studdard) were on “American Idol,” I was trying to work and perform. All the reactions were genuine because I didn’t know what was going to happen next. It was a great thing to go through not having watched it before.

Going gray as a teen

I didn’t know what to make of it. It kinda just slowly grew on me, literally.

Staying gray

Me and Dean the hair artist for the show had been battling back and forth on it. I didn’t change it when I was 18; I’m not changing it now.
