Krista on ‘Survivor: Redemption Island’: Thy fearful symmetry
By Wade KwonEpisode 5 recap
Video: Fan tribute to Krista Klumpp
Two against the world. That’s how Fairhope native Krista Klumpp and ally Stephanie Valencia feel at Zapatera.
But if the tribe keeps winning, they have nothing to fear, especially with their new backup plan.
Alliances are always in motion on “Survivor: Redemption Island.”
Meanwhile, has the Zapatera tribe become too cocky? Has Ometepe relied too much on “Boston Rob” Mariano?
And can Matt Elrod continue his win streak at Redemption Island?
Find out after the jump …

The buddy system: Stephanie Valencia, left,
and Krista Klumpp work out a plan.
Video: Now what for Zapatera?
Well, hello there: Krista and Stephanie offer up
potential allies to “Boston Rob” Mariano and Grant
Mattos while at Redemption Island.
Matt wins: In a race to put together big puzzle cubes, Matt beat challenger Kristina Kell to remain on Redemption Island, his third consecutive victory.
More importantly, Krista and Stephanie used the opportunity to make a new friend. The two were witnesses for Zapatera, while Boston Rob and Grant Mattos were there for Ometepe.
With nothing to lose, Krista and Stephanie told Boston Rob that should all make it to a merge, they would be two more votes for his alliance. But with 13 players still in the game, plus one on Redemption Island, that merge could be a long ways off.
Boston Rob seemed open, if a little skeptical.
Video: Krista discusses watching the duel at Redemption Island.
Zero hour: Krista laments her tribe’s lack of strategy.
Need more pep: At Zapatera, the tribe seems content to coast. Certainly the alliance of six in control isn’t worried either way.
Which puts Krista and Stephanie in a dangerous position. Krista confides, “Since Russell (Hantz) left, there has been zero talk of strategy. They’re not playing the game.”
Naturally, the duo don’t disclose the dealmaking that went on at Redemption Island.
Scalp sisters: Stephanie fixes Krista’s hair.
But neither one is pushing the tribe to strategize, form a secret alliance or go idol hunting. It looks like they’ve already given up.
If only a cheerleader were available to boost morale …
Team meeting: Zapatera strategizes before the challenge.
Immunity/reward challenge: Blindfolded tribes race through a maze, led by an unblindfolded caller, to retrieve four bags of puzzle pieces. The caller then solves a word scramble from the pieces.
The reward? Coffee and pastries.
Stephanie of Zapatera and Boston Rob of Ometepe serve as callers/solvers.
Bag ladies: Krista, left, and Sarita White drop off puzzle bags.
The phrase that pays: Stephanie works on the word scramble.
Ometepe jumps to an early lead, but blows it when Boston Rob struggles to get all the tiles from the bags. Stephanie catches up, only to stall on the puzzle.
Boston Rob solves it, giving Ometepe the win.
You lose some: Zapatera watches helplessly from the sidelines.
And now, Krista and Stephanie are in big, big trouble.
The old switcheroo: Boston Rob, right, shows Grant
an older clue to the hidden immunity idol.
The hustle: Boston Rob can scramble with the best of ’em. Even when he’s on top, he never stops hustling.
Back at Ometepe, Grant accidentally finds the clue to the hidden immunity idol in the coffee jar. And the accidentally shows Boston Rob.

The two sneak off from camp, and Boston Rob hides the clue in his pocket, telling Grant to go back before anyone suspects them.
Boston Rob runs off in the jungle to swap this clue for his old, more vague clue. When Grant returns to the jungle, Boston Rob shows him the old clue. They decide to bury it, and Boston Rob never lets on that he’s had the idol all along.
Smooth.
On the outs: Krista and Stephanie ponder their fate.
Voted out: Zapatera is about to dump Krista or Stephanie. Neither campaigns against the other.
At Tribal Council, Krista calls out the tribe for not playing the game with the ever classic, “I’m not here to make friends; I’m here to play the game.” (Drink!)
Video: Krista argues with her tribe over strategy at Tribal Council.
Closing argument: Krista makes her case at Tribal Council.
Head to the polls: The vote begins.
Once the votes are read, the decision is final.
She calls out the sub-alliances within the big six, pointing out that David Murphy is likely the low end of the pecking order.
While alliance leader Steve Wright takes two votes, the fatal blow hits Krista with six votes.
Fifth out: Zapatera takes out Krista 6-2.
She heads off into the night to Redemption Island, her last chance.
The dark night: Krista arrives at Redemption Island.
Does Krista stand a chance against Matt? Should she have fought harder to stay? Sound off in the comments.

Stephanie looks like Constance Zimmer.
“You gotta hustle if you wanna make a dollar. Everybody knows that.”
I will always love Boston Rob.
