Plan your week: Moonlighting

By

A couple of weeknight events at Moonlight Music Cafe in Vestavia Hills caught our attention.

Tuesday

Enron

The cafe is having a free screening of "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” an Academy Award nominee for documentary feature. [Trailer (Quicktime) low | high]

Throughout the 1990s, Enron was often touted as one of the corporate world’s great success stories. That image was shattered by revelations that the company had schemed to hide its financial failures, manufactured an energy crisis to drive up prices, and wiped out its employees’ pension fund while top executives sheltered their own money.

The movie starts at 6:30 p.m. Event sponsor is Over the Mountain Democrats.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, New York folkie Sam Shaber (pictured) takes the stage, along with fellow folkie Edie Carey. Now, my pal Jeff has been pestering the fool outta me to see Sam perform, so I’m not going to miss this opportunity.

Atlanta’s Creative Loafing reviewed her 2002 CD, “Eighty Numbered Streets”:

Shaber’s voice is recorded at an honest, conversational level, so it’s more like a warm dialogue. Never monotonous, this breezy collection of modern folk-rock is reminiscent of the best of Kristen Hall (who briefly supplies subdued backing vocals). Perhaps the most haunting tune is “Solitaire.” Essentially a memory piece about the loss of Shaber’s screenwriter dad, it closes the album with a somber fadeout.

Yeah, we love the folk, gotta have the folk. Plus, we dig chicks with guitars.

Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8.
