Living in the past: Rock steady
By Wade Kwon
One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, now go August go. It’s only the best of the month, but we like it.
- MTV bookended the month. Original video jock Alan Hunter talked about the cable network’s 25th anniversary on Aug. 1, and sweaty jocks from Hoover blitzed the last week in “Two-a-Days.” Which almost makes up for last night’s lame Video Music Awards. Almost.
- People still don’t believe we were in “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.” To which we say, “Oh, yeah?” because we suck at comebacks.
- The site underwent a makeover to, well, what you’re looking at. Yes, we’re still trying to get the super search just right, but the Archives Deluxe rock.
- So far in 2006, 77 homicides. We’ll say it again slowly: Fire. Chief. Nunn.
- Do the math: 17 syllables times 101 items equals beaucoup haiku.
- Hurricane Idol struck Birmingham twice. Taylor Hicks played the BJCC Arena and WorkPlay (this outing is the most successful and lucrative Idol tour to date). And an estimated 15,000 hopefuls auditioned for next season.
- Birmingham the city has plenty of good institutions that avoid any ties to Birmingham the name.
- A white lesbian activist and a black businesswoman walk into a party confab. It’s a great setup to a huge political joke. Plus, more election coverage in Vote 2006.
- Katrina: one year later. The aftermath was positive in a few subtle ways for Alabama.
- Highlights of my other blog, Wade Kwon.com, because rock ’n’ roll never dies, and flashbacks are forever.
