My Birmingham (Magazine) (plug)
By Wade Kwon
What’s the one thing that makes Birmingham unique for you?
That’s the question put forth by the good folks at Birmingham Magazine, which published a series of essays called “My Birmingham” in the current issue. One of those who answered the call? Yours truly.
My untitled essay discusses connectedness, how this town feels smaller because of all the people we know in common.
Here’s an excerpt:
I have never wanted to leave Birmingham. Never ever. Not my beloved hometown, so troubled, so misunderstood.
This city is as much a part of me as my gentle twang and stubborn belief that we shall (eventually) overcome. This connectedness hasn’t just ensnared me but an ever-growing population of natives and newcomers alike.
That casual familiarity comforts me.
For the rest, run (don’t walk) to the newsstand for the August issue. It’s an outrageously low $2.95, with more essays and a feature on young professionals and networking. What are you waiting for?
My thanks to associate editor Carla Jean Whitley for including my work and photographer Beau Gustafson for my portrait.

Can I get an autographed copy?
I think I can find some time to read this.

No, no, don’t read it! Look at the pretty picture. The pretty picture.

It’s already up in my secret Wade shrine. So where was it taken?

We stumbled into the Grape on Southside with no warning, and the staff was kind enough to let us shoot inside.
Three bottles later, we left and passed out in the blue fountain.
