Zach attack

Cary Brothers shouldn’t be confused with the Statler Brothers or the Wayans Brothers. He’s just one man, with a band, and a whole lotta love from “Scrubs” star and “Garden State” auteur Zach Braff.

New “Blue Eyes” performed at a CD release party at WorkPlay Thursday night.

Brothers hit the stage with his band shortly after 9:30, playing an hourlong set, including one encore. Both he and opening act Stephen Kellogg and The Sixers are featured on the CD, “Joe Muggs Coffee House Vol. 3.”

He alternated slow thoughtful numbers with a few rockers for a pleasing, if not dynamic, performance. The Nashville native, now based in Los Angeles, was laid back in his delivery, musically and bantering with audience members and bandmates.

Highlights were “Something,” “I Feel Alive” (or whatever it’s called) and the obligatory closer, “Blue Eyes.” Brothers seemed comfortable just playing alongside one bandmate on electric guitar or rocking out with all four onstage. Opening with a slow number was likely a mistake, and having the merchandise table (for both acts) in the venue was a definite problem.

At times, his show was better suited for Sunday brunch than a weeknight audience with 100 to 200 somewhat paying attention.

Still, Cary Brothers doesn’t shy away from the dreamlike ballad or the loud upbeat numbers. Good enough for Zach, good enough for us.
