Happy Easter!
Sunday, March 23rd, 2008Enjoy this blessed day. And say hello to the Easter Beagle …
If your TV set and DVR haven’t been stolen, tune in at 7 tonight for the oddly named “Birmingham 35911,” an hourlong report from Alabama Public Television on the city’s struggles with violent crime. Randy Scott will serve as host for this installment of the news series, “Alabama Stories.”
“What’s being done to fight crime in Alabama’s largest city? Some federal statistics suggest there could be an increase in violence in the Magic City. As a new police chief settles in at city hall, this program explores what’s being done to stop this alarming trend.”
(APT will likely make the program available afterwards on its video page, which you can watch if your computer hasn’t been stolen.)
And be sure to visit our Crime Watch page, with the latest on Birmingham under siege. Fun fact: For 2008, we’re at 19 homicides, more than 50 percent ahead of last year at this time with a measly 12.
What is to be done?
Squeak and dribble, squeak
and pass. Dunk! Squeak and … oomph! Ouch!
Whistle! Bounce and net.

In honor of the 10th year (more or less) of the Birmingham Area Music Awards, we present a sensational 18-track mix of the nominees. Tonight at the Carver Theatre, Birmingham Weekly will recognize the newest BAMA winners, as chosen by the readers.
Hip-hop, rock, gospel, classical, jazz and pop fill the mix (though it could use a few more ladies, cough). The full playlist will run you about $18 on iTunes.
Check it out for yourself …
Tickets for the 7 p.m. awards and concert — with performances by the Sixth Avenue Male Chorus, Thed Weller, Jason Bailey, Eric Essix and Feijoada — are $10 ($15 at the door).
Did your favorite local musician make the nominee list? Who should win tonight? Tell us in the comments.

It’s almost 4,000. That would be the number of U.S. military members killed during the war in Iraq, marking its fifth year today. The deadliest year, so far, was 2007, with 901 killed.
Among the fallen are 75 Alabamians, including those killed since the War on Terror began in 2001. To them, we pay this tribute.

Check out the new “Biggest Loser” workout: You sit and throw things at the TV set for two hours and then call 10 friends to ask them why a once-great network can’t put together a compelling reality show.
(We still hug the set when our local boy made skinnier Roger Shultz appears.)
And 1 and 2 and 3 and breathe, after the jump …
You shivered in horror at the redneck zombies of “Hide and Creep.” Now, Crewless Productions prepares to launch your fears … into space.
Such is the setup for “Interplanetary,” which our pal Chance Shirley has been filming for more than a year around Birmingham. The sci-fi/horror comedy should be out eventually, but the good folks at Crewless put together a three-minute preview for last weekend’s OmegaCon.
Like “Hide and Creep,” yours truly has a cameo (as seen in the preview below). Despite that, it should be a good flick.

This limited-edition trailer will be available only until April 1.

Who’s got pull? The juice? The reach? In Alabama politics, the most powerful unelected person turns out to be union boss Paul Hubbert. (Though technically, he was elected by the membership.) The head of the Alabama Education Association ranked No. 1 in Danny’s list of the Top 40 movers and shakers who wield the sweetest power of all, untouchable.
How did Bobby Lowder rank? Or Milton McGregor? Or even Charles McCrary? What, no bloggers?
